THE LATEST DODO and ALL ABOUT DODO

CELEBRATING EMILE SERCOMBE

Poetry at Ramsgate Fire Station 22 September 2023

https://dodovidpoets.blogspot.com/2023/10/a-poetry-extravaganza-celebrating-emile.html

The evening was a joyous occasion celebrating the life, poetry and art of Ramsgate-based Emile Sercombe.

All performers have a personal connection to Emile through his engagement with poetry events and organisations across many venues over the years. These include Apples and Snakes, Worthless Words, Tongue Circus, Dodo Modern Poets, Ragged Trousered Cabaret and Landing Place. He was the host of Eats ‘n’ Beats in Ramsgate.  The event shown here was organised by Multiverse Poets.

We recall his inspirational poetry as well as his knack for bringing people together. Emile involved everyone with his captivating performances and was able to connect with poets and audiences from a diverse spectrum. This event celebrated that and provided a platform to continue connecting with other poets and other poetry events.

The evening was hosted by Multiverse Poets

Poets in order of appearance, introduced by Sarah Tait.

PR Murry, Mark Holihan, Paul Adams, Patric Cunnane, Simon Medhurst, Dan Thompson, Sarah Tait,

Dear poetry lovers

Our dear friend Emile Sercombe died in May. He was a Dodo mainstay since our inception. Here we remember his friendship, his poetry and his art.

Meanwhile we are delighted to include two poems by Emile in this show and poems by Pete and I dedicated to Emile.

NOVEMBER 2020

WELCOME TO VIRTUAL DODO FOUR https://dodovidpoets2020.blogspot.com/ Welcome to the fourth virtual show from Dodo Modern Poets, coming at the end of a year which has brought sadness and loss to people across the world. STUART LARNER lives in Scarborough. A chartered psychologist, he has written scientific papers, articles, stories, poems and novels and plays. Works include an ebook in verse, Jack Daw and the Cat; a novel about cricket entitled Guile and Spin and with Rosie Larner as Rosy Stewart, the novel, Hope: Stories from a Women’s Refuge. He wrote the illustrated sonnet sequence The Car in 2016. His plays have had rehearsed readings and performances in York and Scarborough.

He has stories in Bridgehouse anthologies: ‘A Real Gem’ in Baubles, 2016; ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ in Glit-er-ary ,2017; ‘The Flaw’ in Crackers 2018; ‘The Sound of Love’ in Mulling it Over, Dec 2020.

RACHEAL JOSEPH is an actress, poet and story-teller. Having spent many years working in theatre, Racheal decided to try her hand at writing. Her first poetry collection Little Brown Girl took inspiration from her childhood experiences growing up mixed race in 1950s-1960s London. Encouraged by the success of the poetry collection, she has recently published a book of short stories, Tales From A West Indian Childhood. The stories relate to her experience of being taken from her mother and sent to her father’s homeland, Antigua where it was believed life would be better.

Both collections are available from http://www.rachealjosephpoet.co.uk

FRANCES WHITE

Dodo Modern Poets is saddened to learn of the death of fine poet Frances White, a Dodo regular and dear friend for many years.  She passed away on 24th December 2018, following a diagnosis of motor neurone disease in summer 2017.

She featured in many Dodo shows since her debut appearance in December 2010 at the Poetry Cafe. She joined a strong bill at the Colour House Theatre, Merton in August 2014, when Dodo celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Her last Dodo appearance came in March 2017, during Dodo’s opening night at the King & Queen Pub, London, W1,  a former haunt of Bob Dylan, one of Frances’ favourite artists. She was promoting her recent collection, Swiftscape. More than one poem celebrated her Welsh roots and a tender tribute marked her friendship with Aeronwy Thomas, late daughter of Dylan Thomas.

Frances and Aeronwy, together with Beryl Myers and Annie Taylor, formed a remarkable collaboration in the group Words, producing three poetry and artwork anthologies between 2007 and 2015.

Dodo’s Patric Cunnane was invited by Frances to contribute to the cover of Swiftscape, joining five other poetry notables. He wrote: ‘The poems in Swiftscape ‘outfly the shadows’ as they find new spaces for their ‘soaring shapes’ to lodge in your mind’s eye long after you’ve finished reading. Expect verses as gloriously inventive as the newly coined word which forms the collection’s title.’

Frances’  beautiful poems continue to fly.  Dodo will  remember her with great fondness and love. Our warmest thoughts go out to Steve and her family.

POETRY at the  KING &QUEEN

Wednesday 28th February 2018, Now at http://dodovidpoets.blogspot.co.uk.

 BOB DEVEREUX

Based near St Ives, Cornwall, Bob is an outstanding poet, storyteller, librettist and artist. Savour an extended set during this rare chance to see him in London. His work embraces humour, pathos, landscape and deep human emotion, all delivered in richly resonant west country tones.

 SUE JOHNS

Sue continues the evening’s Cornish theme. She grew up near Penzance and has since moved to London. Her lyrical work embraces Cornish history; politics both personal and political; feminism and the warp and woof of living in a challenging urban environment. She can also be very funny.

Dear poetry lovers,
I’m reading at this free event in London on Monday 5th December. Please come along if you can make it – the evening includes open mic spots and wine available for a donation.

Most of you know that the Poetry Cafe is closed for renovation until next year which explains why Dodo Modern Poets has not been running an autumn season. We’ll be in touch once things are up and running again.

ALL ABOUT DODO ALL ABOUT DODOALL ABOUT DODO ALL ABOUT DODO ALL ABOUT DODO

DODO MODERN POETS
Dodo Modern Poets was founded in 1986 by Patric Cunnane with the intention of bringing new and established poets to as wide an audience as possible and especially to venues off the beaten track

The name Dodo Modern Poets is an ironic tribute to Penguin Modern Poets, a now extinct series of anthologies featuring new poetry which were published in the sixties and seventies. Like the dodo, poetry is always in danger of extinction but somehow rises again to challenge the values of modern society

The group hosts a regular evening at the Poetry Café; in Covent Garden where it presents the most vibrant, entertaining and challenging poets writing today.

DMP has appeared at the Edinburgh Festival, the St Ives Literature Festival, the Hastings Festival and many others including a number of Dylan Thomas inspired evenings in Laugharne, South Wales for which it received funding from the Welsh Arts Council. Other London shows included several appearances at the Wimbledon Studio Theatre and at the Croydon Clocktower arts centre. The group has also appeared in Dublin

Its founder Patric Cunnane is involved in many other poetry activities, he ran a day school on performance poetry in the New Forest. He has created poetry with elderly people and disabled people in day care centres in the London Borough of Merton. He ran school workshops in the same borough as part of the Big Arts project for several years and a poetry workshop at Merton’s arts festival for adults with learning difficulties

Patric Cunnane’s poems have appeared in many publications including The Guardian and have been broadcast on BBC Radio 4. His latest collection, Looking for Eden, was published in 2012
